I’ve wanted to chat about this for a while now. Why is it that sometimes we do tasks with such ease and joy, yet other times it is such a chore and overwhelming? This difference in feeling has become clear to me, and I believe it is motivation v’s inspiration.
If you run your own business you may have heard about finding your WHY. It’s an incredibly popular way of motivating ourselves to do something. If our WHY is strong enough we will be able to keep motivating ourselves during the hard times. This can be an incredibly powerful tool, it really can motivate you to push through the days where you just want to give up….. but, if you also follow ideas about the law of attraction and being vibrationally matched to whatever it is you are attracting, you will also be aware that we don’t need to push. When we are forcing or doing things we don’t really want to do it’s not taking INSPIRED action. INSPIRED action is the type of action required for Law Of Attraction.
As an example, I can only write when I feel like I have something to write about, when I feel inspired to write. If I was to force myself to write to a particular schedule then my writing would be completely different. There would be no flow to it, you would be able to tell when you read it, it was written from my mind rather than my heart.
Creativity comes from the body not the head, from writing a blog to creating the life of your dreams it all comes from our desires and inspiration. You may have heard people say things like ‘get out of your head’, or ‘you think too much’. I totally identify with this as so often I have been one of these people stuck up in my head with my thoughts, mulling them over and over, becoming more and more anxious and overwhelmed.
If your WHY, be it big or small, is what you desire; then you have put that out there, your job now is to follow what feels good. It’s so cliché to say follow your heart and follow your bliss, but the point is that your feelings are your compass. When you are having to force something, it’s a sign it’s not what is right for you to do in that moment. This doesn’t mean ever, just in that moment.
Motivation comes from the mind, Inspiration comes from the heart
When you are forcing yourself to do something it’s not because you feel inspired to do it, that is where you require motivation to come in. This is where your mind is telling you, you need to do this so just get on with it. It’s like a fear response, if I don’t do this then something terrible will happen. You fear losing your big WHY, it getting further and further away from you and you are desperate to hold onto it. It feels heavy, uncomfortable, desperate and painful.
Inspiration feels so different, it’s light and easy. It’s something you really want to do, that you feel inspired to do. It feels safe. This is coming from your body not your mind. I’ve said above it comes from the heart but really it comes from anywhere but the mind, probably a combination of your heart and your gut. To me when I feel it in my gut it feels grounded so usually the inspiration at first is felt more in the heart, it’s like a fantasy that feels so good. When we start to take action on this, the idea becomes more grounded and real. This can be where you may meet with some resistance from your mind.
The mind has a job to do, to keep you safe. It needs to be convinced it is ok to do whatever you are asking it to do. You start exploring the idea further, finding the evidence the mind needs to be convinced. This is a beautiful place to be in as you find others who are already doing what you are wanting to do, and you become even more inspired which triggers more ideas and opens up a whole new world of possibilities for you.
*I’d like to clarify here that inspiration feels light and easy the whole time. It’s doesn’t mean gorge yourself with cake to numb your feelings, or go and drink so much alcohol you can barely walk. That isn’t inspired action, that’s fear. Inspiration is about growth not destruction.
It’s the idea to go take a 10 min break in nature, or go to that shop you were thinking about going to, or call that person, or look up that link in your email when you normally ignore them, do a google search, declutter your home, tidy up the garden, go travelling abroad in a VW Camper Van for a year with your family and dog (this is mine 😉).
It feels light and easy and joyful, not heavy and depressing or mind numbing. It’s fascinating to you, you feel alive! There is an excitement that is greater than the fears. The fears will be there but you have heard the whisper enough to start exploring.
Inspiration is so light and gentle, it can be so easy to ignore it. It really is a whisper compared to the dominating voice of the mind and your fears. But if you can take some time to allow yourself to be quiet, or even just do nothing, then that whisper can be heard.
I wrote a blog on the beautiful art of doing nothing which you can read here.
That whisper can take you on such a journey, I first got my whisper about taking my family away travelling and home schooling around 6mths ago, I toyed with it for a while. It was like a fantasy at first but now we are planning to have everything in place so we can actually do it next year and the whole family is really excited about it, our friends are really excited for us as well. It’s starting to get real now.
I’ll definitely blog more about this side of things for those who are interested. But for now, check out my blog on the beautiful art of doing nothing, take time to listen to those whispers of inspiration.
As Elizabeth Gilbert says in her book ‘Big Magic’ If you don’t take action on those inspired ideas they will go to someone else.
She believes, when we are sent an inspired idea then the idea will only go to those capable of bringing the idea to fruition.
So if the idea comes to you then please listen to it as it is possible for you x
